The Calm in the Storm

Messiah Lutheran Church was flooded by a bursting pipe that caused extensive damage.

The Calm in the Storm

By Kris Carter, MLCA 1st Grade Teacher & Vice Principal

Recently, our church and school was gravely impacted by a pipe bursting due to the extreme cold temperatures. The damage from this event was immense, people were displaced from their offices, routines for the church, school and preschool were revised to accommodate the fans and cleanup efforts, drop off and pick up procedures were changed, chapel was no longer able to be held in the church but instead held in the Fellowship Hall.  In general things were a mess, loud and upsetting.

On our third day of a revised routine to have our morning chapel service in the Fellowship Hall my students were talking about the pros and cons of having their morning devotion in an alternate spot.  As I listened to the kids talk about some of the reasons they liked it, a six-year-old boy spoke up in a quiet manner.  He said, “I think it is kind of sad.” Several people in the class quickly jumped in to tell him he was wrong when finally, someone asked why he thought that.  He stated, “Because there is not a cross.”  I was struck by the simplicity yet the wisdom of his words.  Despite all the noise and confusion in our lives we need not look any further than the cross for our guide and comfort.

In Mathew chapter 8 verse 23 and 24, Jesus rebukes His disciples for being afraid of the wind and waves. He asks them “Why are you so afraid?” He is reminding us despite the mess, confusion and trials in our lives to look to Him, look to the cross for our comfort and strength.

At Messiah Lutheran Classical Academy we encourage our students to focus on Christ. We also work on equipping them with the tools and knowledge of His Love as they negotiate the trials that come to us all in this life.
