23 Apr MLCA Preschool Interactive Play

By Linda Pinkston, MLCA Preschool Director
A preschool classroom is a hive of activity. But what may at first glance seem to be “just play” is much more! Children interact with their teachers and each other in activities which form the basis of math, reasoning, language development, fine and gross motor skills, and more.

For example, after reading and talking about nutrition, the children in the 2s classroom recently engaged in an interactive activity. They took turns selecting plastic fruits or vegetables from a sensory bin, identifying the food item they had chosen, along with its color.

They then matched the selected item to a corresponding colored mat.

After all food items had been placed, the whole class helped identify the color groups again and counted the number of items in each color group.

This activity integrated motor skills, color recognition, and basic math skills like counting and sorting into what seemed like play.
